What can one person’s life tell us about the history of the Philippines?
This Filipino American History Month, join UPAAA for a fascinating journey through the life of Otto Johns Scheerer, whose story spans the final years of Spanish colonial rule, the Philippine Revolution, the Philippine-American War, and the American colonial period.
Told by his grandson, this informal but thoughtfully guided presentation begins at the end—with Scheerer’s retirement—before returning to the beginning of his Philippine story. Along the way, we’ll discover the people, places, and historical events that shaped his life and that he himself shaped, including the German presence in the Philippines and Scheerer’s connections to Baguio and the University of the Philippines.
More than a history lecture, this is one family’s story offering a personal window into a changing Philippines. Come for the stories, stay for the surprises, and perhaps discover a new appreciation for the history that connects us all.
